Information You Need To Known Before Getting A Tattoo
There have been a lot of tattoo artists getting sued on daytime court TV shows lately, so I put together a list of things to do before getting a tattoo.
It sounds obvious, but you should really get to know the tattoo artist and check out the place of business. The artist should be more than willing to answer any questions and address any concerns you may have.
- Ask the artist about their background. Where did they learn the art of tattooing?
- Find out what their qualifications are. Who did they learn how to tattoo from? Are they self-taught? How long have they been a tattoo artists?
- Ask for testimonials of previous customers.
- Ask how long the parlor has been in business. The longer they have been in business the greater the reputation.
- Ask If they belong to the Better Business Bureau, that’s a plus and you should check their record online, which is easy to do.
- Find out if the tattoo studio guarantees their work and if they have a refund policy. The better studios will fix any problems without requiring any money. If the quality isn’t what they represented to you at the initial meeting and design phase, then you will want to be able to request a refund.
- Do a visual inspection of the parlor to see if it is kept clean? Does it look professional.
- Does the tattoo parlor or artist use disposable needles and do they open them in front of the customers? Hepatitis B and C transmission is possible if an unsterilized (unclean) needle is used on someone else that has the diseases.
- Do the artists wash their hands and wear latex gloves when tattooing?
- Does the artist throw away stencils, ink caps, and razors and after each use?
- Do they use an autoclave (an intense heating process) to sterilize (clean) equipment? If they do, ask if the autoclave gets inspected monthly?
- Do they sterilize the bottles used for color and/or the work area with bleach or other approved disinfectants?
- Is an an ultrasonic tank used to rinse the tube and needle set from the tattoo machines?
- Before you commit to getting a tattoo, make sure you understand what the total cost will be. Bigger tattoos can be expensive, and even some smaller tattoos can be expensive. If you’re on a budget discuss this with the artist, because you don’t want any surprises.
- The tattoo artists should provide information about infections, but ask about how to prevent them and how they can prevent you from getting an infection. The artist should know exactly what to do if you think you are developing an infection as well.
- If you have a fear of needles, you should always ask. don’t feel bad about asking if there is a way to help you. Always let the artist know, because he may be able to soothe your fear.
If a tattoo artist hesitates to answer any of your questions or acts hasty, or if they work out of their mother’s dark basement, then find another tattoo artist. Asking questions will ease your concerns and make you feel better about the artist and you won’t have to take sue them on Judge Judy.
