How To Care For Your New Tattoo

By lonnieis | Friday, April 18th, 2008 | Tattoo Guide

Good tattoo artists use antiseptic ointment as they work on your tattoo. The best know that this helps the skin stay healthy. When the tattoo is done, the artist should wipe your tattoo down, clean it and then apply antiseptic ointment. They will then put soft tissue or cellophane on the area.

Most parlors have detailed instructions to help you keep the tattoo healthy. The process of taking care of a tattoo is simple, but just incase your tattoo artist doesn’t give you any instructions then use the tips that follow.

Never take a shower as soon as you get home. Keep the area dry for the first few days, and clean it every few hours. Make sure that your hands are clean before you touch or clean your tattoo, so you don’t have to worry about getting an infection.

Buy a tube of A&D ointment at a local pharmacy or drug store. A&D is the probably the best to use and should be used for the first few days to helps keep your tattoo clean and shiny.

When the ointment begins to dry on the tattoo, wipe the old ointment off and put more on. Don’t rub the tattoo hard, because this can damage the healing process. Also avoid soap for the first few days

Use the ointment for 5-7 days. You’ll notice the ointment is working the first time you apply it. Start using an unscented body lotion, because scented lotions will irritate the tender skin.

Stop using the unscented body lotion after a few days. You may notice some scabbing, which is normal. If this happens be careful when you try to pick it, because you could hurt the design. Instead put A&D ointment on it if it starts itching.

The key to having a healthy, infection free, and nice looking tattoo is to take care of it. Take the advice above and ask your tattoo artists if they have any other instructions.

Happy Tuesday-
I jsut got my 5th tat2 last Thursday. I have never used A & D ointment, nor have my other 4 ever scabbed. I used Lubriderm. I am torn because it is scabbing and still hurts. I got the tat2 on my lower back area. I have been using the A & D ointment. It stings, and I will stop after today. I have an appointment with my dermatologist on Saturday! So, in the interim, what should I do?
